The Importance of BackupsYesterday I got an email from one of my oldest clients, who found a section of his site which had some old videos of an archival project we'd showcased on his site. He's a video artist, and has been around forever, so there's a lot of material on his site. On these videos, however, there was a problem. On a few of the video segments I'd edited to showcase the larger DVD project, there was a random bit of sound that would play. Same bit of sound, out of context, in about 4 of the videos. I did some investigating, and found that the problem is that when I edited the original Final Cut Pro projects there had been a stray sound clip that had been left in the timeline. Now, I will talk about this now because it was something that happened years ago - in fact, it was when I was first learning to use FCP, and so I can blushingly admit to the error and assure you that I have learned better now. However, the problem lies in the fact that I most likely do not have the original project files for that site. It was done almost a decade ago - possibly it's on an old DVD backup, and I'll check when I'm at home (I'm in NYC right now). But it really drives home the idea of investing in some decent storage systems and saving everything. You never know when a careless snippet will rear up and bite you in the keister.
