Rehearsal 3

(Project 3)

9th June

We had our third rehearsal today - click here to meet the dancers.

Unfortunately, Sarah and Maggie couldn't be with us today, so we worked with two duets.  As Veronica suggested, we want to start looking for music to accompany the dance.  If you have any suggestions for appropriate music for these two duets, please email us at: hands-on@satorimedia.com

Relationships Duet - developed

In Rehearsal 2, Abbie and Liz were working on a relationships duet, based on love/hate.  They continued working on that duet today, but they used Dan's story as a basis for developing the movement and the intention.  They worked from the descriptive words that Dan used, and from the structure that he gave in terms of the cycle.

Dan:
Here's an idea for you. It's based on a situation that is happening to a friend of mine.
He's in an unhappy relationship and has "dumped" his girlfriend 6 times already, but each time he gets barracked by her until he agrees to go back out with her again! She's a bit obsessive, always prying into his life, he's loving but completely spineless!

I guess I have an idea of unhappiness and separation, weakness and spinlessness, contrasted then with togetherness and happiness again, only to feel trapped and unhappy again. It's a vicious cycle that he can't break because of his own weakness and her claw like grip over him.

Leaving Duet

Melanie and Ronnie used Veronica's improvisation that we worked on in rehearsal 2 as the basis for this duet.  They used mirroring, copying and transforming the movement.  For the intention, they used the ideas sent in by Özgün, about leaving as being part of travelling.

Özgün:
I am a dancer from Turkey...the project seems interesting...subject in my mind is :travel. because the action 'travellin' carries a lot on his arms...as it means meeting new things, new lifes, new places...and it also means 'leaving' which is always hard...but to explore we should learn to  leave...Leave our habits, friends, cities, family...
Travel is a good subject in my opinion. Many words are to speak of travel; and so many words to dance!

We were particularly interested by the idea of "learning to leave".  Ronnie and Melanie began to work with accumulation, where a series of movements are built up through repetition from the beginning of the sequence and adding a new movement each time.  This gave a sense of learning to the movement.

They began with small movement, and made it bigger, to show confidence, until eventually it became so big that it took them apart.  We saw this as being like growing from childhood to adulthood - changing from an inward focus to an outward one - what's out there?
