We worked from Clare's poem (see below) and some comments that Melanie (dancer) made at the beginning of the rehearsal.

T.S.Elliot -  Excerpt from The Dry Salvages.
"Fare forward, travellers! not escaping from the past
Into different lives, or into any future;
You are not the same people who left that station
Or who will arrive at amy terminus...
....Fare forward, you who think that you are voyaging;
You are not those who saw the harbour
Receding, or those who will disembark.
Here between the hither and the farther shore
While time is withdrawn, consider the future
And the past with an equal mind."

Melanie said that she finds it strange that when you travel on foot, you take so many small steps to make a journey.

We experimented with traveling using very small movements, so that the emphasis is on the traveling rather than the departure or the arrival.  Each of the dancers came up with their individual journey, which transformed as it traveled.  We then combined them to make this dance, which we think might be suitable for the beginning of the piece.  Please send us your comments.
